Police - “massaging†the crime figures
A civilian member of a Police Force has contacted us at Whistle Blowers, asking us to do something about the way the police service is recording attempted burglaries and thefts.
We are told a majority of attempted burglaries are now recorded as the lesser offence of criminal damage, even when there is substantial evidence burglary was the intended goal. The same applies to attempted theft, particularly from vehicles. This expedient ruse of misrecording, greatly reduces crime figures and gives the impression crime involving property is decreasing.
If you have been the victim of an attempted burglary or theft, we would ask you to contact your local police to establish how the crime has been recorded. If it has been recorded as criminal damage, we would like to hear from you. If you are a member of the police service and can shed some light on the allegation, we would like to hear from you, too.
